A board member's main duties are as follows:
Participation in all written and oral procedural stages before the boards of appeal, up to and including the decision terminating the proceedings.

 As rapporteur: making proposals on the taking of evidence and on communications to parties. Preparing draft decisions, including all related tasks.
After gaining experience in the duties of a member of the boards of appeal, helping to train new board members and assistants.
Tasks relating to the organisation and working methods of DG 3.


 Candidates must have a diploma of completed studies at university level or - in exceptional cases - equivalent knowledge acquired over many years of qualified work, as well as many years of professional experience. A broad technical knowledge, in particular of machine tools, rolling, welding, lifts, vehicle technology, textiles as well as control systems, would be advantageous.

 Candidates must have a special aptitude for judicial work and be able to work on a wide range of technical subject-matter. Very high standards of performance are expected. Candidates should also have worked in the field of patent law, and have practical experience as patent examiners or patent agents. They should preferably be between 45 and 55 years of age.

 Candidates must have an excellent knowledge of one official language of the EPO (English, French and German) and an ability to understand the other two.

 The EPO's Central Sick Leave Registration service in Munich has the duties listed below. We are looking for a motivated staff member to strengthen our team.
Main duties
Recording sick-leave notifications
Updating the Lotus Notes database: checking notifications of sick leave, returns to work, and visits to doctors
Together with personnel department, dealing with any error messages due to conflict with other FIPS data (e.g. duty travel, training, parental leave)
Ensuring that doctors' certificates are supplied – if necessary by reminding the staff concerned – recording them in FIPS and archiving them
Setting up and administering an archiving system for sick-leave notifications
Telephone information for staff with queries
Entering data to produce statistics
Recording approved applications for spa cures
Scanning and electronic storage of medical documentation
Recording (in FIPS/Medgate) reductions in working hours and productivity on medical grounds
Adding up (and recording electronically) the absence days of staff on long-term sick leave.
Candidate profile

Main duties

 The Principal Director Patent Law and Multilateral Affairs (PD 5.2) is responsible for the Office's internal and external relations in patent law and industrial property law matters, and in particular for:
preparing the legal framework for the EPO's work in connection with the unitary patent
giving advice, in-house and externally, on the application of the European Patent Convention (EPC) and other international patent treaties (especially the Patent Cooperation Treaty), and on the development of EU law related to patents
the development and harmonisation of European, international and national patent law and practice
relations with the EPC contracting states, third countries, international organisations (especially the EU and WIPO) and users of the European patent system.


 Accordingly, PD 5.2
advises EPO senior management, especially the Vice-President DG 5, and other EPO departments on all matters within the principal directorate's remit
advises states and international organisations on patent legislation and practice
prepares and negotiates bilateral and multilateral agreements
represents the EPO on international bodies within WIPO, the EU and other organisations, especially those representing users of the patent system
comments on fundamental patent issues, and makes proposals for the reform of European and international patent law
organises consultations of those affected by such reform, especially users of the European patent system.


 As head of the principal directorate, PD 5.2 is also responsible for its component directorates: "Patent Law", "International Legal Affairs, PCT ", "Legal Division" and "International Organisations, Trilateral and IP5".
The ideal candidate will have
many years' professional experience in industrial property, especially patents
in-depth knowledge of European and international patent law, including its economic and political context
excellent knowledge of the EU's institutions, governance and patent-related projects, especially the unitary patent and European Patent Court
proven ability to develop networks among stakeholders and to promote ideas in different economic and political circles
several years' management experience.
Minimum qualifications

Main duties

 The Vice-President is responsible for Directorate-General 4 (DG 4) "Administration" at the European Patent Office (EPO). The function of DG 4 is to deliver Office-wide support inter alia in the following areas:
Human Resources - developing, proposing, following up and implementing human resource policies, procedures and standards; dealing with matters related to personnel administration and the welfare of all staff; managing appropriate relations with the EPO staff committees.
General Administration - building projects, internal services and facility management.
Language Service - translating, editing and interpreting, primarily in the three official languages.
Health Service - advising management and staff on all matters related to health at the workplace and on medical aspects of the Service Regulations.
Management Application and Process Support - defining and communicating user needs and advising on the development and implementation of new automation projects.
Central Procurement - supporting the acquisition of goods, works and services for the EPO and providing assistance in the preparation of tenders and contracts.
Security - overall responsibility for security, including security awareness and security relating to human resources and the Office's sites.

 These areas are subject to regular review in accordance with the Office's service needs; a study on support functions at the European Patent Office is currently in progress. Within this portfolio of responsibilities, the Vice-President DG 4 (VP 4) has the lead role in developing and implementing policies and is directly responsible for significant elements of the EPO's budget (salaries, compensation and benefits, operating expenditure for infrastructure, etc). VP4 is also the site-manager of the EPO site in Munich.

 VP 4 is responsible for planning, controlling and motivating the highest level of performance among DG 4 staff (currently about 530 staff members working at four locations: Munich, The Hague, Berlin and Vienna).

 VP 4's duties further include liaising with the Office's other organisational units (DG 1, DG 2, DG 3, DG 5 and the Presidential area), as well as co-operating with the Administrative Council of the European Patent Organisation and its sub-committees and, where appropriate, with external bodies (external stakeholders and other international organisations).

 VP 4 is a full member of the EPO's Management Committee (MAC) and reports to and assists the President of the Office.
Minimum qualifications

 Candidates must have completed studies at university level or have acquired equivalent knowledge over many years of professional activity. They are required to have at least 15 years' working experience, including at least 7 years in senior management positions. They should have managed a large organisational unit in a responsible position in the national or international, public or private sector. They should also have exercised effective leadership in human resources and have developed, implemented and delivered efficient use of human resources and innovative procurement policies. They should have a proven record in developing and implementing efficient and cost-effective service strategies.

 Other requirements include excellent leadership skills through the management of managers, good communication skills and a thorough knowledge of at least one of the EPO's official languages (English, French and German) and the ability to understand the other two, a clear service orientation, the ability to deal efficiently with the various stakeholders (member states, users of the patent system, etc.) and a convincing way of managing people in a multicultural environment.
